Our History

High Street Baptist Church, Isleham was built in 1812 by William Norman.  It was founded on a strong evangelical tradition and was without question used by God for the extension of His Kingdom.

Tom Chipper was called to lead the church in 1965, initially for five years.

In 1971 Tom and his wife Audrey were baptised in the Holy Spirit and began to teach and encourage the church to embrace this teaching and experience.  God moved mightily in the ensuing years calling many people from a wide area to worship in Isleham.  Many were teenagers with no previous church attendance, who God gloriously saved and equipped for worship and service.

The church grew very significantly, between 1973 to 1983 from its previous membership of 60 to 260.  A housegroup system was introduced to provide care, support and accountability.

During the 1980’s we planted out four churches due to increased growth.

In 1981 elders were appointed to share the responsibility of the leadership and in due course others were added to that Eldership.  The approach to leadership began to move from a very largely democratic style towards one where the leadership took a more proactive role in continually seeking God's direction for the church and as this became clearly revealed decisively acting on it.

In 1988, Tom laid down the pastorate in order to serve churches in East Anglia while the local church in Isleham continued to function with the leadership of the Elders. Tom remained a part of the church advisors to the leadership team.

1996 saw the appointment of Paul Hedger, who had by this time served on the Eldership for 15 years,  as Lead Elder.  Tom and Audrey stepped into a new supportive role, remaining within the church.

Looking back is good for there is much to be thankful for, but we are now looking forward with excited anticipation to the future and to all that God has in store for us.
